Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has joined the debate over paid awards, arguing that true recognition should be earned through merit rather than financial influence.
Commenting on the controversy surrounding the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours, the lawmaker suggested that individuals who are approached to pay for awards should reflect on what such offers imply about their public reputation.
In a Facebook post, A Plus contended that organisers who request payment in exchange for recognition demonstrate a lack of respect for the recipient and a belief that the individual may be willing to purchase honours rather than earn them.
According to him, highly respected public figures are unlikely to receive such proposals because of their established reputations and perceived integrity.
He cited Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jr. as examples of personalities he believes would not be approached with offers to buy awards.
A Plus further revealed that Dr. Ato Forson was reportedly unaware of his nomination until the day of the award ceremony.
He explained that he personally contacted the Finance Minister’s personal assistant to inform him about the nomination and to arrange for someone to receive the award on the Minister’s behalf.
The MP maintained that public recognition should be based on measurable achievements, dedication and service rather than financial considerations.
He stressed that genuine impact cannot be purchased and must instead be earned through hard work, sacrifice and tangible contributions to society.
His comments come amid growing public discussions about the credibility of some award schemes and renewed scrutiny over reports that certain honours may require financial commitments from nominees.
The debate has also intensified following calls for greater transparency and accountability in the organisation of awards intended to recognise excellence in public service and leadership.
