Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will seek to restore Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to the position of Chief Justice if the party wins the 2028 general election and returns to government.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the NPP considers Justice Torkornoo’s removal from office unjust and believes her reinstatement would be necessary should the party regain political power.
Speaking on Atinka TV, the Minority Leader criticised the circumstances surrounding the former Chief Justice’s removal and alleged that the process was influenced by a broader conspiracy within the Supreme Court.
He specifically accused the current Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, of having knowledge of what he described as the events leading to Justice Torkornoo’s removal.
“My Lord Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor Gertrude Torkornoo. Her removal was a grand conspiracy and he knows it and we know it but one day one day, the true story will be told,” he alleged.
Mr Afenyo-Markin insisted that the NPP would not consider the matter closed if it returned to power.
“I don’t see why that woman will not be reinstated when the NPP wins power. Her removal is an act of injustice,” he said.
Justice Torkornoo, who was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023, became the first head of Ghana’s Judiciary under the Fourth Republic to be removed from office.
Her removal has since remained a contentious political and legal issue, with the NPP repeatedly questioning the circumstances and justification for the decision.
The Minority Leader’s latest comments indicate that the issue could remain a significant point of political debate as the NPP prepares for the 2028 elections.
Afenyo-Markin’s position also suggests that a future NPP administration would seek to revisit the circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal and potentially reverse the decision if the party regains control of government.
