Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly condemned recent National Security raids on the residences of former government officials, warning that the actions reflect poorly on President John Mahama’s leadership.
The controversial operations targeted the homes of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, sparking national outrage. Reports indicate that security personnel conducted extensive searches, questioned household members, and seized CCTV equipment from Dr. Addison’s residence.
Following public criticism, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai defended the operations, insisting they were conducted lawfully. However, many Ghanaians and opposition figures remain unconvinced, arguing that the raids form part of a politically motivated crackdown.
Taking to his X handle, Afenyo-Markin accused the government of weaponizing state security agencies to silence political opponents, calling it an attack on democracy.
“Abusing the rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Ms. Shamima Muslim and Dr. Justice Srem-Sai should not have been deployed to defend such unlawful actions by the government!” he wrote.
The Minority Leader urged President Mahama to take immediate steps to restrain his operatives, warning that failure to act could erode public confidence in state institutions and damage Ghana’s democratic reputation.
With tensions rising, the government faces mounting pressure to justify its actions and assure Ghanaians of its commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law.
