The coastal town of Martil, Morocco has come alive as over 25 African nations compete in the 2025 Africa Seniors Beach Volleyball Championships, a pivotal qualifier for the 2025 World Cup in Adelaide, Australia.
The tournament, held under the auspices of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), runs from June 23 to 30 and features top-tier male and female athletes from across the continent. A total of 88 women’s doubles teams from 22 countries and 114 men’s doubles teams representing 27 nations are battling for the top four slots in each category to qualify for the World Cup.
Morocco is also playing host to the Under-21 African Beach Volleyball Championships, which runs concurrently, with winners expected to represent Africa at the global U-21 championship.
CAVB President Bouchra Hajij, speaking at the opening ceremony, praised participating countries for making the journey despite logistical and financial hurdles. She dedicated the event to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, emphasizing the role of sport in fostering development across Africa.
Teams from across West, East, North, Central and Southern Africa—such as Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Algeria, Cape Verde, and Gambia—are competing fiercely in early matches, with several standout performances recorded on Day One.
On the men’s side, Egypt and host nation Morocco made strong starts, each notching multiple straight-set wins. Gambia, fielding multiple teams, had mixed fortunes but impressed with two victories over Rwanda and Mozambique. Nigeria fell to Egypt but bounced back with a win over Kenya.
The women’s category also saw Morocco shine with hard-fought wins over Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Rwanda. Ghana started strong, beating Burundi in straight sets, while Cape Verde dominated Togo twice.
The championship has so far lived up to its billing, showcasing a high level of competition and setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting week of action as teams chase their World Cup dreams.
