Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, has assumed office as the new Majority Leader, pledging to use consultation and compromise to strengthen cooperation between the Majority and Minority Caucuses.
Mr Agalga formally took over the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus following an official communication from the party to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
His appointment follows the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The new Majority Leader, in his first remarks after assuming office, said he would seek to build consensus on matters before Parliament while ensuring that the Majority remained focused on delivering the government’s programme.
He specifically assured Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and the Minority Caucus that he would be open to consultation and compromise whenever necessary.
“We can make compromises as and when necessary. And I assure you, I’ll give it to you. I would reach out, I would consult, but at the same time, I would work to ensure that the Reset Agenda of our President is accomplished for the betterment of all of us,” he said.
Mr Agalga’s assumption of the Majority Leader position comes at a time when Parliament continues to play a central role in advancing the government’s legislative and policy agenda.
While promising to engage the Minority, he made clear that his leadership would also focus on ensuring that the government’s commitments under President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda receive the necessary parliamentary attention.
His approach signals an emphasis on dialogue and cross-party engagement as he begins his tenure at the helm of the Majority Caucus.
The change in leadership was necessitated by Mr Ayariga’s nomination to the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs portfolio, creating the need for a new leader to coordinate the NDC’s business on the floor of Parliament.
