Great Olympics board chairman and former Sports Minister Amarkai Amarteifio has thrown his full support behind Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, describing him as the best option available for Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Amarteifio made a strong case for the shot-stopper, insisting that his quality surpasses all other Ghanaian goalkeepers, including those based abroad.
“We have a goalkeeper now who is better than any goalkeeper anywhere. All the goalkeepers we have abroad, none is better than Ben Azari, in my humble opinion,” he stated.
His endorsement comes as Ghana step up preparations for the World Cup with a series of friendly matches aimed at finalising the squad ahead of the tournament.
However, Asare’s form has sparked debate after a costly error in Ghana’s 2–0 defeat to Mexico in a pre-World Cup friendly on May 23, 2026. The goalkeeper’s early distribution mistake led directly to Mexico’s opening goal at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc.
Despite the setback, Amarteifio’s comments reflect ongoing disagreements over Ghana’s goalkeeping hierarchy as the technical team weighs its final squad decisions.
The Black Stars are set to face Wales in another friendly on June 2, with the final World Cup squad expected to be announced on June 1.
With competition for places intensifying, Asare’s performances in the remaining games could prove decisive in shaping his role at the global tournament.
