The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reaffirmed its commitment to party unity and merit-based leadership, stressing that tribal or historical claims have no place in the governing party’s political tradition.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Caucus emphasized that the NPP’s strength lies in its diversity and inclusivity, not in sectional or ethnic dominance.
“Ours is a Party that welcomes and rewards merit, loyalty, and service — not lineage, tribe, or religious identity,” the statement read. “Every member, regardless of origin or background, has an equal right to aspire to any position within the Party or in national leadership.”
The declaration follows recent public comments by Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante Boateng, suggesting that Ashantis, due to their historical contributions, deserve a privileged role in NPP leadership.
While the Caucus did not dwell on the remarks, it made clear that such views were inconsistent with the NPP’s founding principles and could undermine unity within the party.
“These comments are deeply offensive and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect, and equality that the NPP stands for,” the Caucus stated, adding that it “rejects any attempt to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks or question the belonging of any loyal member.”
Reiterating its commitment to disciplined communication, the Caucus urged all members, particularly party leaders, to exercise restraint and maintain decorum in public discourse.
“We urge all members, especially those in leadership, to be guided by restraint and decorum in their public statements,” it noted.
Concluding, the Ashanti Regional NPP Parliamentary Caucus reaffirmed its loyalty to the larger goal of unity and national cohesion, saying: “We stand firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana.”
