In a move that highlights the growing intersection of faith leadership and national governance, Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has been appointed as Chairman of the newly constituted Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The appointment, made by President John Dramani Mahama, was officially confirmed during an inauguration ceremony at the Ministry of the Interior on June 26, 2025. The event was presided over by Interior Minister, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
Rev. Dr. Wengam’s elevation to the strategic leadership role marks a significant blend of spiritual leadership and public service, as he steps into a position tasked with steering policy direction, institutional reforms, and accountability within one of Ghana’s most critical security institutions.
The Governing Council is mandated to offer oversight and strategic direction to the GIS, which is pivotal in safeguarding Ghana’s borders, managing migration, and supporting national security and development objectives.
Commenting on the occasion, the Interior Minister emphasized the need for the council to foster efficiency, professionalism, and innovation in immigration management, particularly in light of emerging global migration challenges and cross-border threats.
Rev. Dr. Wengam brings a wealth of leadership experience from both ecclesiastical and public service circles, and his appointment is seen as part of a broader effort to introduce ethical leadership and integrity into the management of key state institutions.
Observers say his role will be critical in overseeing reforms, enhancing capacity within the service, and deepening collaboration between the GIS and other national and international security agencies.
