Parliament has formally welcomed Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the new Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency following his victory in the recent by-election.
The oath of office was administered on Tuesday by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, during proceedings in the House. The swearing-in followed the March 3, 2026, by-election in which Baba Jamal secured 10,884 valid votes to defeat four other contenders.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana officially communicated the writ of election to the Clerk of Parliament on March 4, in accordance with Regulation 43(2b) of Public Elections Regulation C.I. 127.
In line with Standing Order 13(1), the Speaker administered both the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office to the new legislator. Mr Bagbin also presented Baba Jamal with copies of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the revised Standing Orders of Parliament to guide his work in the legislature.
Addressing the new MP, the Speaker reminded him of his responsibility to the people of Ayawaso East, warning that he would be closely monitored to ensure he delivered on his mandate.
“I’m going to hold you accountable to the good people of Ayawaso East… My eyes will be on you. If you don’t perform, I will personally campaign against you in the next election,” Mr Bagbin said, drawing laughter from Members of Parliament.
With Baba Jamal’s inauguration, the NDC maintains its strength of 185 seats in Parliament. Four independent MPs currently align with the Majority side, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus holds 87 seats.
Baba Jamal previously served as the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency in the Sixth Parliament, from January 2013 to January 2017, following the December 2012 general elections.
