A hopeful for the position of Western Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwasi Bonzoh, has proposed a grassroots-focused strategy to rebuild the party and reclaim parliamentary seats lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Bonzoh said the NPP’s poor performance in the Western Region during the last elections showed the need for a major review of the party’s mobilisation and organisational strategies.
He argued that no constituency should be considered beyond the party’s reach if the NPP strengthened its polling station structures and improved its engagement with grassroots members.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Bonzoh said his primary focus as Regional Secretary would be to build the capacity of party members at the polling station level.
“I am a polling station man, and we all know that elections are won from here, I am going to train and upgrade strategies going into elections 2028,” he said.
He said the NPP needed to secure a strong parliamentary majority if it returned to government in 2028 to ensure the effective implementation of its policies.
Mr Bonzoh therefore called for unity among party members and urged them to work together to secure victories in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He said the NDC’s victories in constituencies such as Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Kwesimintsim demonstrated that electoral fortunes could change and that the NPP could also reclaim constituencies currently held by its political opponent.
“If the NDC was able to win Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Kwesimintsim in the last parliamentary elections then NPP can win Amenfi West and East in 2028,” he said.
Mr Bonzoh expressed disappointment with the NPP’s current parliamentary representation in the Western Region, where the party holds only two of the 17 seats.
“It is regrettable that out of the 17 seats in the region, the NPP has only two. But I promise you, we will recapture Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Sekondi, Kwesimintsim, Jomoro, Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira and all constituencies we have won before,” he said.
The former District Chief Executive for Ellembelle and former parliamentary candidate for the area said his long experience in party organisation and administration had equipped him to lead efforts to strengthen the party’s regional structures.
He said his agenda would include restoring unity within the party, improving coordination between the regional and grassroots structures and making the NPP more cohesive and competitive.
Mr Bonzoh also called for a peaceful internal campaign ahead of the party’s elections, urging aspirants and supporters to avoid insults, intimidation and violence.
He said the NPP’s internal processes should be conducted in a manner that strengthened the party rather than creating divisions that could undermine its chances in the 2028 elections.
According to him, a united party with strong polling station structures would be better positioned to reverse the NPP’s recent electoral setbacks and regain its influence in the Western Region.
