Burnham Set to Become UK Prime Minister Unopposed as Labour MPs Rally Behind Leadership Bid

Andy Burnham is on the brink of becoming the United Kingdom’s next prime minister after securing overwhelming backing from Labour MPs in the race to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.

The former Greater Manchester mayor has received the nominations of 322 out of Labour’s 403 MPs, leaving him just one endorsement short of the point at which it becomes mathematically impossible for any rival candidate to enter the contest.

With no other candidate officially declaring an intention to run, Burnham is widely expected to become Labour leader unopposed when nominations close next week, paving the way for him to take office as prime minister on 20 July.

The development caps a remarkable political comeback for Burnham, whose return to Westminster followed his recent by-election victory in Makerfield after several years serving as Greater Manchester mayor.

In a statement following the wave of endorsements, Burnham expressed gratitude to Labour MPs for their support, describing it as a sign of the party’s collective desire for a new direction.

He said his leadership would focus on shifting power away from Westminster, revitalising local economies and ensuring that economic growth benefits communities across every part of the country.

“The support I’ve received reflects a shared belief that Britain needs a new approach to politics,” Burnham said, pledging to pursue policies that deliver opportunities beyond London.

Burnham’s path to the leadership became even clearer after former Defence Minister Al Carns ruled out launching a rival campaign, effectively removing the last significant prospect of a contested race.

Under Labour’s leadership rules, candidates require the backing of 81 Labour MPs to qualify for the contest. Burnham’s commanding lead means no other potential challenger would now have enough MPs available to secure the required nominations if he gains one more endorsement.

He is also expected to easily obtain the required nominations from affiliated trade unions and socialist societies, making his formal election as Labour leader largely a procedural step.

Although many Labour figures have welcomed the prospect of Burnham taking over without a leadership contest, some MPs have urged him to provide more detailed policy proposals before assuming office.

Burnham has already outlined several priorities, including devolving more powers to local authorities, establishing a new Downing Street unit based in Manchester to strengthen regional decision-making, and increasing public control over key utilities such as water and energy.

On foreign policy, he recently acknowledged that Labour’s initial response to the conflict in Gaza “didn’t get it right,” promising a different approach under his leadership.

He has also indicated that he would retain National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell and support increased defence investment while committing to greater transparency over military spending and procurement.

Sir Keir Starmer, who resigned following Labour’s poor performance in local elections and growing pressure from within the party, has publicly endorsed Burnham, saying he believes the former mayor would make “a good prime minister.”

Unless there is an unexpected late challenge before nominations close, Burnham is set to become Labour leader and Britain’s next prime minister without a vote among party members, bringing an end to one of the shortest leadership transitions in the party’s recent history.
