Growing calls for the dismissal of the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, have been met with caution from the Christian Council of Ghana, which is advocating a measured and balanced response.
The Council’s General Secretary, Rev. Cyril Fayose, says while the recent remarks that sparked the controversy must be firmly addressed, they should not necessarily result in her removal from office.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Rev. Fayose emphasised the need for accountability without excessive punishment, noting that discipline should be proportionate and aimed at correction rather than outright dismissal.
The issue arose after Dr. Awusi apologised to Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, over comments linked to discussions on illegal mining. The situation prompted further intervention from Julius Debrah, who issued an official apology on behalf of government.
Rev. Fayose acknowledged public concerns but stressed that Christian values support second chances, urging leaders to treat the matter as an opportunity for learning and institutional improvement.
He, however, insisted that beyond apologies, government must clearly distance itself from the conduct and reinforce standards expected of public officials to avoid the perception of mere symbolic action.
The Council also cautioned against generalising the actions of a few individuals to the entire clergy, calling instead for targeted accountability and responsible leadership across both religious and public institutions.
