A deadly collision between a DAF truck loaded with rice and a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway brought traffic to a standstill on Monday afternoon, as emergency services battled to save lives and restore flow on the busy stretch.
The accident, which occurred at Wakrom, left five people dead and 12 others injured. The truck, registered AW 9548-13 and carrying 700 bags of rice, collided with the Accra-bound minibus with registration number GC 9728-21, leading to extensive damage and chaos on the highway.
Eyewitnesses and bystanders acted swiftly before emergency teams arrived, rescuing 12 victims and rushing them to the Biriwa Polyclinic. One later died, according to medical officials.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rescue team, led by DOII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, arrived at 14:59 hours and extricated five more victims trapped in the wreckage. Sadly, four were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while another critically injured person is receiving treatment.
Though the driver and mate of the DAF truck escaped unhurt, the incident left hundreds of commuters stranded in traffic for hours as police, fire officers, and other responders worked to clear the wreckage and restore calm.
Authorities have since cautioned drivers on the route to exercise vigilance, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
