Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has left his position after reaching a mutual agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his service agreement.
The GFA announced the decision on Thursday, October 1, 2026, bringing an end to Queiroz’s tenure amid a difficult period for the national team.
The circumstances leading to the termination were not fully disclosed by the GFA. However, Queiroz indicated that the decision followed discussions between the two parties and reflected the conditions surrounding his time in charge of the Black Stars.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
Queiroz’s departure comes shortly after Ghana suffered successive defeats in the ongoing 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their most recent qualifying matches.
While the GFA did not expressly link the termination to those results, Queiroz acknowledged that the team’s recent performances contributed to the decision.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” the Portuguese coach said.
Queiroz said he took charge of the national team with the objective of helping to establish a stronger foundation for the Black Stars and contributing to the development of Ghanaian football talent.
He expressed appreciation to the GFA, particularly its President, for giving him the opportunity to lead the national team.
The coach also thanked his technical team and other members of the football fraternity who supported the Black Stars, especially during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite his departure, Queiroz urged Ghanaians to continue backing the national team and its players.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” he said.
He said the Black Stars still possessed significant talent and potential, adding that unity, support and the right environment could help the current generation achieve success for Ghana.
Queiroz also expressed gratitude to Black Stars supporters for their passion and backing during his time with the team.
He said he would leave Ghana with “respect, gratitude and pride” after the end of his tenure.
