The Muhajirun African American Islamic Institute (AFRAMISCO) at Tema Community 23, an institution established with the support of National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has demonstrated its commitment to Muslim-Christian coexistence after a Christian pupil emerged as the best-performing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate in the district.
The student, who graduated from the institution, achieved an aggregate of 8, emerging as the district’s best-performing candidate and providing a notable example of the school’s inclusive approach to education.
Although AFRAMISCO is an Islamic institution, management said both Muslim and Christian children have over the years received tuition at the school, reflecting Sheikh Sharubutu’s broader commitment to promoting harmony and peaceful coexistence between the two faith communities.
The achievement has further highlighted the school’s academic record, with AFRAMISCO consistently producing strong BECE results, including candidates who have attained aggregates 6, 7 and 8.
According to the Director of the school, Imam Jafar Issah, its approach combines academic development with discipline, ethical values and character formation under its motto, “Promoting Knowledge and Ethics.”
Teachers at the institution also identify pupils experiencing academic difficulties and provide targeted support, guidance and encouragement to help them improve their performance and build confidence.
Imam Jafar Issah said the school’s success in producing high-performing pupils, regardless of their religious backgrounds, reflects the values upon which the institution was established.
He said: “Sheikh Sharubutu is credited with building the institution for the Muhajirun African American Islamic Institute (MAAII) Association, of which he serves as Life Patron. His visits, counsel, encouragement and prayers, according to management, continue to inspire the school community.”
The school’s latest achievement comes as AFRAMISCO prepares to provide free admission and tuition to pupils for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The initiative, supported by a private individual who has pledged financial assistance towards teachers’ allowances, is intended to make education accessible to children whose families may be struggling to meet the cost of schooling.
Imam Jafar Issah said the opportunity would particularly benefit children whose education has been interrupted because of financial difficulties, as well as pupils who require additional academic support.
Eligible pupils will receive free admission and tuition throughout the 2026/2027 academic year, with the school inviting parents and guardians in Tema Community 23 and surrounding communities to take advantage of the initiative.
Imam Jafar Issah said the programme is part of its broader commitment to ensuring that financial circumstances do not prevent children from accessing quality education.
He, however, appealed to other well-meaning individuals to support the initiative as it seeks to sustain free tuition and expand educational opportunities for children.
The school’s announcement comes amid what management described as attempts by some individuals involved in disputes over its land to spread false information and damage its reputation.
Imam Jafar Issah alleged that some persons who encroached on the school’s land and were unable to register the affected plots had subsequently sought to portray the institution negatively.
He noted that the alleged attacks had not distracted the school from its educational mission, pointing to its continued growth and strong performance in the BECE as evidence of its commitment to quality education.
The emergence of a Christian pupil as the district’s top BECE performer, management said, further underscores the institution’s role not only as a centre for academic excellence but also as a platform where children from different religious backgrounds can learn and grow together.
