The Medical Superintendent of Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, Mame Yaa Adobea Nyarko, has urged the government to operationalise the completed Weija-Gbawe Children’s Hospital to reduce pressure on paediatric healthcare services in Accra.
According to Dr Nyarko, the activation of the new facility would ease the growing burden on Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, which remains the only standalone public children’s hospital in the capital.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, May 24, 2026, she said the hospital is struggling to cope with increasing patient numbers from areas such as Weija, Kasoa and Winneba.
Dr Nyarko explained that the hospital, which was built many years ago, is now overstretched as healthcare workers continue to manage rising referrals with limited infrastructure and resources.
She noted that opening the Weija Children’s Hospital would improve access to specialised paediatric care and help reduce maternal and child mortality in the Accra metropolitan area.
Despite the challenges, she commended health workers at the hospital for their dedication and continuous efforts to provide quality care for children.
Her appeal comes amid increasing public calls for the government to fully operationalise the completed Weija-Gbawe Children’s Hospital to strengthen healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region.
