The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has called off its nationwide strike after more than a month of industrial action, paving the way for the resumption of work in the Civil and Local Government Services.
The strike, which began on February 20, 2025, brought services in government institutions to a standstill, as workers protested the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Births and Deaths Registrar. CLOGSAG argued that the role should be reserved for a career civil servant, citing concerns over political neutrality in public service appointments.
In a statement issued on March 28, Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo confirmed that the National Executive Council (NEC) had decided to suspend the strike to facilitate further engagements on the matter.
“With this decision, all affected staff are expected to return to work on Wednesday, April 2, 2025,” the statement read.
The industrial action had sparked nationwide debates on the political independence of Ghana’s civil service, with CLOGSAG insisting that public sector professionalism should not be compromised. As negotiations continue, stakeholders are keenly watching whether the government will reconsider the appointment or reaffirm its decision.
