The Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman has called for a more respectful and responsible approach to political discourse following a recent controversy in Parliament over remarks about JB Danquah.
The group, led by its Convenor, Akomane Yeboah, petitioned Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin in response to comments made by Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. During a parliamentary session, Murtala allegedly described JB Danquah as a CIA operative and a traitor, sparking outrage among some political groups and historians who recognize Danquah as a key figure in Ghana’s independence struggle.
In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on March 7, Yeboah emphasized the need for a balanced and respectful approach when discussing historical leaders. He urged politicians and the public to avoid divisive rhetoric that could undermine national unity.
“We must be cautious in our political discourse and show reverence to those who contributed to Ghana’s progress. Regardless of our political differences, unsavory comments about past leaders should not be encouraged,” Yeboah stated.
The debate over JB Danquah’s legacy remains a contentious issue in Ghanaian politics, reflecting broader divisions in interpretations of the country’s independence history. While some view him as a nationalist hero, others argue that his political affiliations raise questions about his role. The Coalition for Youth Development’s petition adds to the ongoing national conversation about how Ghana remembers its political figures and the need for respectful engagement in political discussions.
