The Dagbon Kingdom has begun the customary processes that follow the death of its paramount ruler, Ya-Na Abukari II, after traditional authorities officially announced his passing on Monday.
The announcement was made by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi after the performance of the traditional rites required under Dagbon custom.
As tradition demands, the news of the Ya-Na’s passing was first signalled through the sounding of the royal talking drum, a symbolic act that formally informs the kingdom of the death of its overlord.
Following the announcement, the late Ya-Na was buried in accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions.
The passing of Ya-Na Abukari II marks the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most influential traditional kingdoms and ushers in the customary processes leading to the selection of a new overlord.
Traditional authorities are expected to announce the next stages of the succession process after the completion of the required funeral rites and customary observances.
The Dagbon Kingdom, one of the country’s oldest and most respected traditional institutions, plays a significant role in preserving the cultural heritage and chieftaincy traditions of northern Ghana.
The death of Ya-Na Abukari II is expected to draw tributes from traditional leaders, government officials and the wider public, who are likely to honour his contributions to peace, unity and the development of the Dagbon Kingdom during his reign.
