Dialysis Crisis at Korle-Bu: Patients Struggle as Supply Shortages Disrupt Treatment Amid MahamaCare Rollout

For nearly a week, patients at the main dialysis unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra have been unable to receive their lifesaving treatments due to a critical shortage of essential medical supplies.

The sudden disruption has forced many to seek dialysis at private facilities, often at significantly higher costs, adding financial pressure to families already grappling with the burden of chronic kidney disease.

The timing of the crisis has been particularly frustrating for patients, given the recent rollout of the MahamaCare programme, which promised to improve access to essential healthcare services, including dialysis.

“We thought things would improve with MahamaCare, but instead, we’re back to square one,” said a patient who preferred to remain anonymous. “This isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a matter of life and death.”

Relatives of affected patients echoed these sentiments, expressing disbelief that such a critical service could be disrupted so soon after the government’s high-profile healthcare initiative.

“It’s heartbreaking to watch my loved one suffer because of something as basic as a supply shortage,” said one caregiver. “We need urgent action from the government to address this.”

While hospital officials have yet to release an official statement, sources close to the facility suggest that the issue stems from delayed procurement processes and logistical challenges, raising questions about the effectiveness of current supply chain management systems.

Advocates are now calling on the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to step in, not only to resolve the immediate crisis but also to ensure the long-term stability of dialysis services under MahamaCare.

“The government must act swiftly to prevent a full-blown healthcare crisis,” said a health policy analyst. “The success of MahamaCare depends on reliable and consistent service delivery.”

As patients wait anxiously for a resolution, the incident has sparked broader concerns about the sustainability of Ghana’s public healthcare reforms and the need for tighter oversight to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
