The recent act of generosity by Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board and National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stirred significant public debate after a video surfaced online showing him handing over a sum of U.S. dollars to former fetish priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The video, which quickly went viral, sparked backlash from sections of the public, including NDC supporters who questioned the optics of the gesture. Some, like former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak, argued that such public displays of dollar gifts risk undermining confidence in the Ghanaian cedi at a time when economic stability remains a national priority.
However, Nana Agradaa, addressing the matter during a church service, defended Gyamfi’s act, revealing that the amount involved was just $800. She urged critics to view the gesture as a positive act of charity rather than a political misstep.
“How much is $800? If you belong to the NDC, don’t let this disturb you. The Bible teaches us to tap into other people’s blessings. If you criticise this act of kindness and later accept money from a government official, you’re bringing a curse upon yourself,” she said.
Agradaa further described the money as a simple gift, encouraging others to appreciate acts of kindness rather than rush to condemn them.
In response to the growing criticism, Sammy Gyamfi issued a public apology on social media, expressing regret over the incident.
“This was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need,” Gyamfi wrote. “I understand the uproar this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by it. To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion.”
Meanwhile, Citi News has reported that Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has summoned Gyamfi to the Jubilee House for a meeting to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident, underscoring the sensitivity of the situation and the heightened public scrutiny over the actions of public officials.
The unfolding saga has sparked a broader conversation about public ethics, discretion, and the challenges of balancing personal generosity with public accountability.
