Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over the unexplained arrest and continued detention of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on May 28, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the urgent need for clarity, highlighting that the charges against Wontumi remain undisclosed and his whereabouts unknown.
Bawumia stressed the importance of upholding constitutional rights regardless of political affiliation, warning that any breach could erode public confidence in Ghana’s justice system and democratic foundations. He also lauded the efforts of Wontumi’s legal team in safeguarding his rights amid the opaque situation.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which reportedly detained Wontumi, has yet to provide official information about the arrest, fueling concerns among party supporters and the general public.
Dr. Bawumia’s call underscores growing demands for accountability and transparency from state institutions, urging all parties to adhere strictly to the rule of law to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity.
