Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a critical meeting with political parties contesting the Akwatia by-election on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to deliberate on operational arrangements for the September 2 polls.
The meeting, confirmed by the EC’s Eastern Regional Director, aims to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on procedures to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and credible election.
“Our common goal is a free and fair election. We appeal to all political parties to adhere strictly to the rules so that the electoral process concludes peacefully,” the Director said.
The by-election was triggered by the untimely death of Ernest Kumi, who had served the constituency for only six months following the 2024 general elections.
Political tensions have heightened in Akwatia, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeking to retain the seat and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) determined to flip it in their favor. Campaign activity has intensified, with party leaders and influential figures making regular visits to rally support.
The EC’s upcoming meeting underscores its commitment to pre-empt potential conflicts, clarify election protocols, and reinforce rules for candidates and party agents ahead of the vote.
