Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, have been re-arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shortly after being discharged by a court in a high-profile GH¢78 million case.
The dramatic development unfolded on Tuesday, May 5, after the Attorney-General’s Department withdrew all charges against the couple and other accused persons tied to alleged irregularities in the procurement and supply of food items under the national school feeding programme.
The accused had been on trial over claims that their actions caused a financial loss of GH¢78 million to the state.
During proceedings, Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai told the court that the prosecution had decided to discontinue the case following the emergence of fresh evidence.
He later confirmed the move in a Facebook post, stating that the decision was necessary to guarantee all accused persons a fair and speedy trial as required under the Constitution.
Following the withdrawal, the court struck out the charges and discharged the accused persons.
However, moments after leaving court, EOCO operatives reportedly moved in and re-arrested Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife, sparking fresh legal and public scrutiny.
Authorities are yet to officially disclose the grounds for the new arrest.
The case has already attracted significant attention due to prolonged courtroom disputes, including disagreements over witness statements and questions surrounding the role of an EOCO officer in the prosecution team.
With the latest twist, the legal battle appears far from over as observers await clarity on EOCO’s next move and the implications of the fresh evidence cited by prosecutors.
