All is set for this year’s President’s Cup showdown between Ghana’s football giants, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, in what promises to be a powerful blend of sport, culture, and national pride at the Accra Sports Stadium this Sunday.
While the fixture traditionally honours the sitting President of the Republic, this year’s edition is shaping up to be more than just a football match — it’s an all-out celebration of Ghanaian unity, patriotism, and entertainment.
Dr. Toni Aubynn, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee for the 18th President’s Cup, emphasized the symbolic and emotional weight of the annual event during a press briefing. He praised corporate sponsors for their quick and enthusiastic support, especially considering the short notice.
“The President himself is excited about Sunday. This isn’t just a match — it’s entertainment, it’s unity, it’s Ghana,” Dr. Aubynn said. “We are grateful to the companies that came on board to sponsor with both cash and products.”
What sets this year’s Cup apart is its fusion of football and music. Dancehall icon Shatta Wale, supported by Kweku Smoke and other popular performers, will electrify the stadium with live performances, elevating the experience beyond the pitch.
Sports Minister Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, who inaugurated the fundraising committee, lauded the efforts made to ensure a successful event, describing the Cup as an emblem of national solidarity.
“This is not just about football,” said Mr. Adams. “It’s about showcasing Ghanaian excellence across multiple fronts — sport, music, organisation, and national cohesion.”
Security preparations have been reinforced to ensure fans enjoy the occasion in a safe and festive environment. Fans have been urged to observe all safety protocols and cooperate with law enforcement officials throughout the event.
Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) President, Mr. John Kofi Ansah, added his voice in commending the planning team and reminded supporters to maintain decorum and celebrate in peace.
The President’s Cup has become a cherished fixture on the Ghanaian sporting calendar — a moment when rivalries are rekindled on the field, but the overarching spirit remains one of unity and respect for the highest office in the land.
As fans don their red or rainbow colours this weekend, all eyes will be on Accra, where football meets culture in a festival of national pride.
