Ghana’s football fraternity is in mourning following the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong, who lost his life after an armed robbery attack on his team’s bus.
The incident occurred as Berekum Chelsea were returning from a league fixture against FC Samartex 1996 in Samreboi. According to the club, their bus was ambushed on the road by suspected armed robbers who blocked their path.
In a statement, the club indicated that the attackers—reportedly masked and armed—opened fire on the vehicle as the driver attempted to escape by reversing. The violent encounter left players and officials shaken, with Frimpong sustaining critical injuries.
Despite efforts to get him urgent medical attention, the Ghana Football Association later confirmed that the player had succumbed to his injuries.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread grief across the football community, with the GFA extending condolences to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and club officials. The association also called for unity and support for those affected during this difficult time.
Authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, have launched investigations into the attack, with assurances that efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible.
The incident has also raised fresh concerns about safety on highways, particularly for teams travelling long distances for league matches.
Clubs and stakeholders across the league have begun expressing solidarity, as calls grow for enhanced security measures to protect players and officials during domestic competitions.
