The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to advancing gender inclusivity in Ghana’s security sector through key leadership appointments.
FOSDA described the selection of DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service and DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong as Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service as a significant step toward bridging gender gaps in security governance. The organization views these appointments as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda.
“These appointments reflect the government’s dedication to fostering gender diversity in leadership roles within the security sector and align with the principles of UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security,” FOSDA stated.
The organization emphasized the expertise of the appointees, noting that Baffoe-Bonnie has been instrumental in reforming prison health systems, while Ntow-Sapong has made notable contributions to fire safety and operational efficiency.
While celebrating these advancements, FOSDA urged the government to implement gender-responsive budgeting and accountability mechanisms to further institutionalize gender equity in security services.
“We encourage the President John Mahama-led government to sustain these gains and appoint more women into leadership positions in the security services,” said Theodora W. Anti, Executive Director of FOSDA.
The organization reaffirmed its support for policies that empower women in decision-making roles and called for continuous efforts to ensure long-term inclusivity in Ghana’s security apparatus.
