Ghana is set to break new ground in the world of sports as it takes a bold step toward competing in American football at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This historic move is driven by a collective vision to introduce and develop the sport in Ghana, with a strong push from Ghanaian-born NFL stars and international partners.
At the heart of this initiative is the “Road to LA 2028” project, spearheaded by top African NFL players in collaboration with BE AUTHENTIC and the Ghanaian American Football Federation (GAFF). The goal is not only to assemble a formidable team for the Olympics but also to lay the foundation for American football’s growth in Ghana.
A major milestone in this journey will be the Ghana National Flag Football Team Tryout Camp, scheduled for March 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Park. This event is expected to attract some of the sport’s biggest names, including Brian Asamoah, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones, Paulson Adebo, and former NFL standout Zygie Ansah. Their involvement underscores the seriousness of Ghana’s Olympic ambitions and the commitment to nurturing local talent.
The inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Olympics presents a unique opportunity for Ghana to make its mark in a sport that has traditionally been dominated by North America. While Ghana is globally recognized for its excellence in soccer, athletics, and boxing, this project aims to add American football to its growing list of sporting achievements.
NFL star Brian Asamoah highlighted the broader vision behind the movement, stating, “This is about more than just competing—it’s about building a legacy and showing the world that Ghana can excel in American football.”
A group of nine Ghanaian-born NFL players, who have made a name for themselves in the United States, are leading the charge. Their mission is to pass down their expertise, mentor young athletes, and create a sustainable pathway for Ghanaian players to break into the global football scene.
With elite training programs, grassroots development, and a structured approach to talent identification, Ghana is laying the groundwork for success. If the momentum continues, the country could soon emerge as a powerhouse in American football on the African continent and beyond.
The Road to LA 2028 is more than just an Olympic dream—it’s the beginning of a new chapter for Ghanaian sports.
