The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has lauded the passage of the Sports Fund Bill, calling it a transformative step that promises to tackle the long-standing funding challenges in Ghanaian sports.
Mr Richard Akpokavie, President of the GOC, described the initiative as a pivotal moment for the country’s sports sector, emphasizing that reliable funding has been the missing link in achieving international sporting success.
“Just as the Value Added Tax provides a stable source for national interventions, the Sports Fund will offer a dedicated and dependable stream to support sports development across the country,” Mr Akpokavie told the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He noted that the Fund’s scope goes beyond financing competitions, aiming to strengthen systems, nurture talent, and expand opportunities for future generations of athletes.
Chronic underfunding, the GOC explained, has historically hampered athlete preparation, infrastructure development, technical training, and grassroots programs. With the Fund in place, national federations will have the capacity to plan long-term, enhance athlete welfare, and boost performance at continental and global competitions.
The Committee also praised Hon. Kofi Iddie, Minister for Sports and Recreation, for his decisive leadership and collaborative approach in ensuring the Bill’s passage. The GOC highlighted that the Minister’s efforts were instrumental in creating a framework that promotes accountability, transparency, and sustainable growth in the sports sector.
“This Fund signals a new era for Ghanaian sports, where strategic planning, investment in talent, and consistent support can finally align to produce results on the world stage,” the Committee stated, expressing optimism for improved performance and international competitiveness.
The GOC’s endorsement underscores broad expectations that the Sports Fund will redefine sports financing, strengthen federations, and provide Ghanaian athletes with the resources necessary to excel.
