The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following an attack on Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ghana), the incident occurred on March 6, 2026, leaving two Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured. The protest was addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, submitted the protest on behalf of the government, condemning the attack and calling for a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The government described the attack as a grave violation of international law and stated that such acts undermine the protections granted to UN peacekeeping personnel. Ghana also demanded that those responsible be identified and held accountable.
In the statement, Ghana urged the United Nations to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of Ghanaian troops and other personnel serving under the UNIFIL mission.
The government further reassured its soldiers that it would pursue justice and work to guarantee enhanced protection for its peacekeeping contingent. It also expressed sympathy and support for the injured soldiers and their families.
Ghana reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to UN peacekeeping operations and emphasized that the safety of peacekeepers remains critical to maintaining international peace and security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain engaged with UN authorities regarding the matter.
