Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has assured Ghanaians that there will be no immediate change in transport fares, despite recent reductions in fuel prices. This announcement comes amid growing public calls for fare adjustments following a decline in fuel costs, which many commuters hoped would lead to lower transport fares.
Addressing concerns, Mr. Nikpe clarified that while the Ministry remains in continuous discussions with transport unions and operators, any changes in fares are based on a pre-established formula that ensures fairness and consistency. He emphasized that the Ministry has not yet reached a point where a fare review is necessary.
“We have a clear formula in place that guides any fare adjustments, whether increases or decreases,” Mr. Nikpe explained. “At this moment, we have not yet reached the threshold for any fare changes.”
The Minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining a collaborative relationship with transport operators, underscoring that this will help to ensure stability within the sector. He reassured commuters that, for the time being, fares will remain the same.
“We are working closely with all stakeholders, and I want to assure the public that there won’t be any immediate changes to fares,” Mr. Nikpe said, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to balancing both commuter interests and the operational needs of transport service providers.
This stance seeks to maintain a delicate balance between offering relief to passengers and ensuring the long-term viability of transport operators, with further discussions on fare adjustments expected to take place in the near future.
