Antoine Semenyo delivered the defining moment of this season’s FA Cup Final, scoring a sensational winner to hand Manchester City a hard-fought victory over Chelsea FC at Wembley and etch his name into football history.
The 26-year-old forward produced a moment of brilliance in the 72nd minute, improvising an audacious flicked finish that broke the deadlock in an otherwise tense and cagey final.
His goal not only secured City’s 16th major trophy under manager Pep Guardiola but also made Semenyo the first Ghanaian player to score in an FA Cup final.
The strike capped an extraordinary rise for the former Bath City FC loanee, who was playing non-league football just eight years ago before completing a high-profile £62.5 million move from AFC Bournemouth to City in January.
Speaking after the match, Semenyo admitted the goal was instinctive.
“It has happened a couple of times in training — it happened perfectly today. Everything happened so fast and I had to improvise quickly,” he said.
The victory completed a domestic cup double for City following their Carabao Cup Final triumph over Arsenal FC earlier this year and kept alive their hopes of a domestic treble as they continue chasing the Premier League title.
Guardiola praised Semenyo’s impact since arriving at the club, revealing that his main instruction to the Ghanaian forward was simple: remain unpredictable.
“The first thing he said when I came was don’t change your game,” Semenyo revealed. “He wants me to keep creating chaos.”
The final also marked another milestone for Marc Guehi, who became one of the few players to win back-to-back FA Cup titles with different clubs after helping Crystal Palace FC win last season.
With two league matches remaining and City still chasing more silverware, Semenyo’s Wembley heroics have added another remarkable chapter to his rapid rise in world football.
