Ghana’s hopes of a home medal in the men’s 100 metres at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championship in Accra were dashed after Abdul Rasheed Saminu and Joseph Paul Amoah finished outside the podium positions in a tightly contested final.
Both athletes had earlier boosted expectations after winning their respective semi-final heats, setting up anticipation for a strong finish in front of home supporters.
However, in the final showdown against Africa’s top sprinters, the Ghanaian duo were unable to convert their form into medals.
Amoah placed fourth in 10.31 seconds, narrowly missing out on bronze, while Saminu followed closely in sixth place with 10.32 seconds in a highly competitive race.
Gold went to Cameroon’s Alowede Eseme Emmanuel, who clocked 10.25 seconds, while South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana took silver in 10.31 seconds. Nigeria’s Chidera Ezeakor secured bronze.
Despite the setback, Ghana’s sprint duo remain in medal contention as they shift focus to the men’s 200 metres and the 4x100m relay events later in the championship.
