The Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment for Electronic Communication (GiFEC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has outlined what he describes as the major achievements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government within its first two months in office.
Speaking on Hot Issues, he emphasized that the administration has already begun fulfilling key promises, citing improved governance, economic stabilization, and institutional reforms.
“An Air of Freedom”
Mr. Tanko-Computer asserted that one of the most significant achievements of the NDC government so far is what he termed the “air of freedom.”
According to him, under the previous administration, Ghanaians felt suppressed, likening the situation to captivity.
However, he believes the new government has restored confidence and liberty, particularly among labor unions and citizens.
“It was like we were in an era of slavery, where a few people controlled the country as if it was their personal property. But now, unions are free, and there is a fresh sense of independence,” he stated.
Swift Cabinet Formation and Policy Implementation
Highlighting the administration’s efficiency, Mr. Tanko-Computer noted that President John Mahama was able to form his cabinet within 14 days of being sworn into office—an unprecedented feat in Ghana’s political history.
He further outlined progress on key policy promises made within the government’s first 120 days.
Among these, he pointed to the ongoing National Economic Forum, the formation of a Constitutional Review Committee, and the launch of an Education Forum.
Economic Stabilization Efforts
Discussing economic recovery, Mr. Tanko-Computer noted that interest rates are falling, citing the Finance Minister’s latest update on Treasury bill yields and borrowing costs.
He added that businesses are showing signs of revival due to reduced borrowing costs, while the cedi remains relatively stable around GHC 15 per dollar.
“Businesses are now picking up. You can’t operate with a 39% interest rate, but now we are seeing improvements,” he explained.
He also addressed the government’s recent payment of bondholders, countering the opposition’s claims that the administration inherited empty coffers.
According to him, the previous government failed to properly manage financial obligations, but the new leadership has been able to honor commitments within a short period.
Crackdown on Corruption
Mr. Tanko-Computer warned that the government is determined to retrieve state resources allegedly misused by officials of the previous administration.
He revealed that assets are being frozen and that officials suspected of financial misconduct will be pursued, even if it means engaging international bodies such as Interpol.
“We will not leave even one penny behind. Those who are running away, we know where their properties are. If necessary, we will extend our search beyond Ghana,” he said.
Outlook and Public Expectations
Despite the achievements outlined, he acknowledged that more work remains to be done, particularly in addressing bread-and-butter issues affecting citizens.
He urged Ghanaians to remain patient as the government continues to roll out its economic and social interventions.
With just two months in office, the government’s early steps are being closely scrutinized.
As the administration moves forward, many will be watching to see whether its promises translate into long-term economic relief and national progress.
