The Ghana Medical Association has clarified that there is no evidence suggesting the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital refused emergency patients during recent overcrowding at its Accident and Emergency Centre.
In a statement responding to public concerns over congestion at the facility, the Association explained that temporary patient redirection measures were introduced by hospital management to ease pressure on the emergency unit while ensuring patient safety.
The GMA said its engagement with hospital authorities, including staff and the Medical Director, indicates that the steps taken were necessary to manage capacity challenges and maintain quality care delivery during the period.
It further noted that the situation at the Accident and Emergency Centre has since improved, with normal operations largely restored following interventions by management.
The Association also raised concerns about a query issued to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, arguing that it risked suggesting wrongdoing by management despite the context of overcrowding and operational strain.
While welcoming ongoing discussions between the hospital and the Ministry of Health, the GMA stressed that attention should remain on strengthening emergency healthcare systems rather than focusing on blame.
