The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (Ghana) held a productive congress last Saturday, setting the stage for the upcoming elective congress scheduled for April 26, 2025. The event gathered various member associations to discuss key issues and prepare for the election of new executives who will steer the GOC for the next four years.
Outgoing President of the GOC, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, presided over the extraordinary congress, where the financial accounts for the fiscal year 2023/2024 were presented. Unlike previous years, when account presentations led to disagreements, delegates expressed satisfaction with the GOC’s financial management this time around. The meeting also saw GOC Treasurer Mr. Frederick Acheamong, along with his deputy Isaac Aboagye Duah, present the budget for the upcoming year, which received overwhelming approval from the delegates.
However, there was some discussion regarding the capping of affiliation fees, with members calling for further dialogue to ensure fairness across all associations. Despite this, the overall mood remained positive, with delegates recognizing the progress the GOC has made under its current leadership.
In a speech to the media after the congress, Mr. Nunoo Mensah thanked delegates for their trust and support, highlighting the achievements of his tenure. He urged the incoming leadership to build on the progress made, especially with regard to the OlympAfrica project at Amasaman, which he hopes will continue to receive significant investment.
Mr. Yakubu Abdul Razak, a representative from the Ghana Kickboxing Association, also praised the board’s leadership, commending Mr. Nunoo Mensah for his transparency and prudent financial management. Razak expressed confidence that the incoming president would continue to improve upon the strong foundation laid by the current leadership.
As the election draws closer, all eyes will be on the GOC’s next steps, as new leaders are chosen to take the organization into the next phase of its development.
