The 2025 Baseball League was launched in Accra with a strong emphasis on youth empowerment, character building, and the role of sports in national development, as Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, rallied young athletes to embrace the deeper essence of sporting excellence.
Instead of focusing solely on competition, Mr. Akpokavie used the occasion to highlight the enduring values of the Olympic movement — Excellence, Respect, and Friendship — as tools to shape responsible and impactful citizens.
Addressing athletes, coaches, and sports officials gathered for the league’s unveiling, the GOC President stressed that sport should be seen not only as a path to medals but as a transformative force for personal and national growth.
“Sport has the power to mold individuals into better human beings. It teaches discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership — values that transcend the field,” he said.
Mr. Akpokavie urged baseball players, especially the youth, to see the sport as a long-term avenue for self-improvement and community impact, encouraging them to remain actively involved even beyond their peak athletic years.
The event also served as a platform to celebrate grassroots sports leadership. The GOC President praised Mr. Ernest Danso, President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation, and his team for their relentless efforts in promoting the game, which remains a niche but growing sport in Ghana.
He also recognized Mr. Albert Frimpong, a foundational figure in Ghana Baseball, for his pioneering contributions, calling him a symbol of commitment and long-term vision in Ghanaian sports.
Several notable figures from other federations graced the launch, including Ghana Athletics President Mr. Bawah Fuseini, Armwrestling President Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, GOC Secretary General Mr. Mohammed Muniru Kassim, and representatives from Cricket and Sports for All — reinforcing the message of collaboration across disciplines to promote sports development in Ghana.
With the 2025 Baseball League set to run in various regions, the spotlight now turns to the next generation of athletes as they not only compete for glory but carry the responsibility of exemplifying Olympic values on and off the pitch.
