Gov’t Pulls the Plug on National Cathedral…Dissolves Secretariat

The government has officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat, bringing an end to one of Ghana’s most controversial and costly religious infrastructure projects.

Originally envisioned by former President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship center and a symbol of Ghana’s religious unity, the National Cathedral has been mired in controversy—from funding opacity to allegations of financial mismanagement and lack of transparency in its execution.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the dissolution and announced that the government will no longer allocate public funds to the abandoned project.

“This aligns with the long-standing position of President John Dramani Mahama,” Kwakye Ofosu stated. “He has consistently maintained that under his leadership, no taxpayer money will be spent on the National Cathedral.”

The move is being viewed by governance experts and civil society groups as a bold step toward restoring public confidence and prioritizing national development needs over controversial legacy projects.

Critics of the cathedral initiative had long argued that, while symbolic, the project failed to align with Ghana’s economic realities and pressing social infrastructure needs. Many Ghanaians had called for greater investment in education, healthcare, and job creation rather than in an expensive religious monument.

The decision to dissolve the Secretariat may mark the final chapter of the National Cathedral saga—one that is now serving as a case study in public accountability and the importance of prudent governance.
