A committee tasked with investigating the fire at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Akosombo Switchyard has concluded that the incident was triggered by insulation failure, ruling out sabotage or any form of human interference.
The findings were presented to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, by the committee chairman, Ing. Dr. William Amuna, who also serves as Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana and former GRIDCo Chief Executive.
According to the report, the fire, which occurred on April 23, 2026, was not the result of any deliberate action or operational misconduct but stemmed purely from a technical fault within the system.
The incident led to significant disruptions in electricity supply from the Akosombo Generating Station to the national grid, affecting power distribution across several parts of the country.
Following the event, the investigative committee was established on April 24, 2026, to determine the cause and propose measures to prevent a recurrence.
Dr. Amuna noted that the investigation thoroughly examined all possible causes, including sabotage and arson, but found no evidence of deliberate human action.
Beyond establishing the cause, the committee also outlined recommendations aimed at strengthening the resilience of the national transmission network.
A key proposal is the creation of an additional control centre to serve as a backup to the existing facility, thereby improving operational redundancy and emergency response capacity within GRIDCo.
The committee believes the measure would enhance system reliability and reduce the impact of future technical failures on the national grid as electricity demand continues to grow.
