Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has dismissed recent claims that more than 140,000 residents in the Effutu Constituency are facing severe water shortages, describing the assertions as inaccurate and unsupported by operational data.
Speaking during an inspection of the Winneba Headworks, Managing Director Adam Mutawakilu clarified that the treatment plant continues to produce 9,700 cubic metres of water daily without major interruptions, ensuring that the majority of residents maintain access to safe water.
The MD’s remarks came in response to statements by Effutu MP and former GWL Board Chairman, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had suggested widespread disruptions in the constituency. Mr. Mutawakilu said the official records contradicted these claims, noting that no large-scale shortage had occurred.
“Whenever there is an interruption, whether for a few hours or several days, Ghana Water Ltd always notifies customers. The Winneba Headworks has not experienced service interruptions that could impact 140,000 people,” he stated.
According to the Managing Director, the only residents affected are those along the Accra–Takoradi road construction corridor, where ongoing works have disrupted pipelines. About 1,110 households are impacted, including 210 in Effutu and 900 in neighbouring Awutu-Senya.
Mr. Mutawakilu assured that GWL is actively working with the Ghana Highway Authority, the Minister of Roads and Highways, and contractors to relocate the affected pipelines. Procurement of new pipes is near completion, and restoration works are set to begin soon.
The MD also provided an update on the Weija Treatment Plant, which supplies Kasoa and surrounding areas. He revealed that four filters had been out of service for years, limiting production capacity, but reassured residents that repairs were underway. “Very soon, production will increase, allowing us to push more water to Kasoa,” he said.
Concluding his visit, Mr. Mutawakilu reaffirmed GWL’s commitment to improving water service nationwide under the government’s infrastructure reset agenda. He emphasized that management, staff, and stakeholders are working diligently to address challenges and ensure reliable water supply across all regions.
