In a show of rare political unity, the Berekum East Municipal Assembly on Tuesday gave a unanimous endorsement to President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee, Hajia Fatimatu Abubakar, as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
All 38 Assembly Members voted in her favour, delivering a 100% endorsement in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission in Berekum, Bono Region. The landslide confirmation marks a strong mandate for Hajia Abubakar to lead the municipality’s development agenda.
Also elected during the session was Prince Adade, Assembly Member for the Kutre Number Two Electoral Area, who emerged as the new Presiding Member. He secured 33 votes after his opponent, Bright Yamoah of the Awerempe Electoral Area, withdrew from the race ahead of voting.
However, the peaceful atmosphere of the proceedings was briefly disrupted by political friction between Berekum East MP, Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, and the NDC’s Berekum East Constituency Chairman, Kwaku Hinneh. The two clashed over the inclusion of certain government appointees in the voting process, with some NDC members questioning their party loyalty. The situation threatened to derail the session, but swift intervention by the police helped restore calm and ensured the exercise proceeded without further incident.
In her acceptance speech, Hajia Abubakar expressed deep appreciation to President Mahama for the trust reposed in her, as well as to the Assembly Members for their resounding support.
“I am truly honoured and grateful for this overwhelming endorsement. It is a call to serve, and I assure you of my utmost commitment to inclusive governance and rapid development for Berekum East,” she said.
Hajia Abubakar emphasized her intent to foster strong collaboration with all key stakeholders—including traditional leaders, local institutions, and community members—to drive progress across the municipality.
Her confirmation comes at a critical time for Berekum East, as the area looks to strengthen infrastructure, enhance social services, and build on gains in local governance. With a clear mandate and unified Assembly backing, all eyes will be on Hajia Abubakar’s next steps as she takes the helm of the municipal administration.
