Hundreds of residents displaced by violent ethnic clashes in the Savannah Region have sought refuge in Wenchi Municipality, prompting urgent appeals for humanitarian assistance.
Miss Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), revealed that as of Wednesday, August 27, about 650 people had arrived at Subinso Number Two for shelter following clashes in Gbinyiri, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba District. The conflict, which erupted on Sunday, August 24 over a land dispute, has reportedly claimed at least 10 lives and left several others injured.
Ms. Gyamfi expressed concern over the vulnerability of the displaced population, many of whom are women and children, emphasizing the urgent need for food, clothing, and other essential supplies. “We are appealing to development partners, NGOs, religious bodies, corporate institutions, and philanthropic individuals to come to the aid of these people,” she said.
With support from traditional authorities, the Municipal Assembly has arranged temporary shelter for the displaced under 24-hour police protection, ensuring safety and order. However, the MCE noted that additional resources—such as tents, blankets, detergents, and other consumables—are critically needed to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
Describing the clashes as unfortunate, Ms. Gyamfi urged local residents to remain calm while the authorities continue to provide assistance and stabilize the situation.
The appeal highlights the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian response in the face of rising internal displacement due to conflict in Ghana’s Savannah Region.
