During a landmark address to Ghana’s Parliament in Accra, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi underscored the vital importance of free and fair elections as the foundation of democracy worldwide, applauding Ghana’s exemplary role as a democratic beacon in Africa.
Highlighting India’s own experience as the world’s largest democracy—boasting 2,500 political parties and 22 official languages—Prime Minister Modi affirmed the close collaboration between India’s Election Commission and its Ghanaian counterpart, fostering shared commitment to electoral transparency and integrity.
“In an era marked by global uncertainties, India’s democratic stability shines as a beacon of hope,” Modi stated, emphasizing that India’s rapid progress serves as a catalyst for global growth and stability.
The Prime Minister reiterated India’s pledge to be a steadfast partner in Africa’s development, aligning with Africa’s Agenda 2063 to secure a sustainable and prosperous future. He emphasized a partnership built on equality, capacity-building, and empowerment, aimed at creating self-sustaining ecosystems rather than mere investment.
“Our approach is demand-driven, focused on local capacities and opportunities,” Modi said. “India remains committed to Africa’s development journey, growing together as equals.”
Modi’s visit signals a new chapter in Ghana-India relations—historic since India established its consulate in Accra in 1953—and marks intensified cooperation in strategic partnership, trade, and South-South collaboration.
The address also recalled the 2015 India-Africa Summit hosted by India, which included then-Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama among its distinguished guests, highlighting the longstanding ties between the two nations.
As Ghana continues to lead democratic governance in Africa, India’s engagement reaffirms the continent’s pivotal role in global democracy and development, promising strengthened ties and shared growth in the years ahead.
