President John Dramani Mahama has stressed that Ghana’s recent economic recovery can only be sustained if it is anchored on integrity, discipline and justice, urging citizens to embrace strong moral values alongside national development efforts.
Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, the President said economic progress alone would not guarantee lasting national transformation unless it was supported by ethical leadership and responsible citizenship.
“Our economic recovery has been built upon discipline. It must now be sustained by integrity. It must be protected by justice, and it must be strengthened by our national unity,” he stated.
President Mahama noted that while the government could implement sound economic policies and reforms, values such as honesty, accountability and patriotism could not be imposed through legislation.
“Economic transformation without moral transformation cannot endure. Prosperity without integrity is fragile. Development without discipline is unsustainable. And growth without justice leaves too many people behind,” he said.
He explained that the theme of this year’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, “Resetting Our Values to Build the Ghana We Want,” underscores the need for Ghanaians to recommit themselves to principles that promote national development.
The President called on public officials to serve with honesty and reject corruption, while urging journalists to remain committed to truth, teachers to inspire integrity, parents to instill discipline in their children, and all citizens to contribute positively to nation-building.
According to him, Ghana’s future will depend not only on infrastructure projects and economic reforms but also on the daily actions and decisions of ordinary citizens.
“The Ghana we seek will be built by the millions of ordinary Ghanaians who make the right choices every day to do what is right,” he said.
President Mahama concluded by urging Ghanaians to make the values celebrated during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving a permanent part of the country’s national life, describing integrity, accountability and unity as essential pillars for sustainable development.
