The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured voters of a smooth and credible parliamentary by-election in Ayawaso East, as more than 40,000 registered voters prepare to elect a new Member of Parliament on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The poll follows the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which created a vacancy in the constituency.
In the lead-up to the vote, the EC has emphasised strict adherence to electoral laws, particularly cautioning against vote-buying and other forms of malpractice. Speaking to Citi News, the Commission’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, stressed that the election would be conducted under the first-past-the-post system, where every vote counts. He warned that any proven case of fraud could influence the Commission’s final decision.
The contest features candidates from the two major political parties, with the New Patriotic Party fielding Baba Ali and the National Democratic Congress presenting former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, as its candidate.
Security personnel have been deployed across polling stations in the constituency to maintain peace and order throughout the exercise. Authorities say the presence of law enforcement officers is part of broader measures to ensure a transparent and incident-free election.
With preparations finalised and campaigning concluded, residents of Ayawaso East now head to the polls to determine who will represent them in Parliament.
