Veteran midfielder James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing down the curtain on a distinguished 24-year career in English football’s top flight.
The 40-year-old concludes his playing days after three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he provided leadership, depth and experience in midfield as the club maintained its Premier League status. His departure follows the expiration of his contract this summer.
Milner’s retirement marks the end of one of the most enduring and versatile careers in Premier League history. Over the course of his journey, he represented six clubs — Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton — earning a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable and adaptable professionals.
In February, he set a Premier League record for the most appearances, a milestone that reflected his longevity, consistency and elite fitness across two decades at the highest level.
His trophy cabinet includes three Premier League titles — two with Manchester City and one with Liverpool — as well as a UEFA Champions League triumph with Liverpool in 2019, one of the defining moments of his career.
On the international stage, Milner earned 61 caps for England after making his debut in 2009 during his time at Aston Villa. He featured in two European Championships and two FIFA World Cup tournaments, often serving as a dependable squad member.
Reflecting on his career in a social media message, Milner described a journey filled with highs and challenges, highlighting both achievements and relationships built along the way.
He noted that from debuting for Leeds United at just 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, he could never have imagined the path his career would take, adding that the friendships made in football would remain his most treasured memory.
