Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has appealed to fans to rally behind the Black Stars and new head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales on Tuesday, Ayew emphasized the need for unity, patience and collective support as the team enters a new phase under fresh technical leadership.
He said the focus should be on rebuilding and looking forward rather than dwelling on past performances.
“The past is the past, there’s a new chapter and we just need to focus on what’s ahead of us — and obviously tomorrow is the first step,” Ayew stated.
The skipper acknowledged the passion of Ghanaian supporters but urged them to be more patient with the evolving squad and technical direction.
“I know Ghana; I know the country where we come from. Sometimes we take things a bit too personal, but I think we just need to all be patient and be relaxed and be positive about the squad, about the team and about the manager as well,” he added.
Ayew expressed confidence in Queiroz’s early influence on the team, noting that the players are responding well to his methods as they work to build chemistry ahead of the tournament.
He stressed that the friendly against Wales represents an important first step in shaping the team’s identity and competitiveness.
“We are going in to perform well, to get results and to start building from there,” he said.
The Black Stars captain also highlighted the integration of new players into the squad, describing the process as positive and encouraging.
“We have a lot of new players and we just want to improve. We just want to go there and put on a show and represent Africa and Ghana the best we can,” he noted.
Ayew added that he believes the team has the potential to exceed expectations at the World Cup if unity and commitment are maintained.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L for the tournament, where they will face Panama in Toronto before meeting England and Croatia in Boston and Philadelphia respectively.
The friendly against Wales is expected to serve as an early test of the team’s readiness and cohesion under Queiroz’s leadership.
