Kumasi Asante Kotoko once again proved their resilience on the big stage, overturning a first-half deficit to defeat arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 in the 2025 President’s Cup thriller at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The high-profile clash, held to honour President John Dramani Mahama, lived up to its billing, with passion, drama, and controversy defining one of the most anticipated encounters in Ghanaian football.
Hearts of Oak appeared to be in control after 23 minutes when teenage forward Hamza Issah capitalised on a goalkeeping blunder by Kotoko’s Mohammed Camara to hand the Phobians the lead. The goal seemed to put Hearts on the front foot in a game they had dominated early on.
But the tide shifted sharply after the break. Kotoko returned from halftime with renewed purpose and aggression. Their pressure paid off when defender Konadu Yiadom, under pressure, accidentally deflected a dangerous cross from Peter Amidu into his own net, pulling Kotoko level.
Just moments later, the Porcupine Warriors completed the stunning turnaround. A quick break initiated by a long clearance saw Albert Amoah deliver a pinpoint assist to Kwame Opoku, who calmly finished past the Hearts goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
The second half also delivered its share of controversy. Hearts of Oak had a potential equaliser ruled out for offside, a decision that sparked protests from their bench. Minutes later, a handball by Kotoko’s Zackaria Fuseini resulted in a penalty for Hearts, offering them a lifeline. But goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, determined to make amends for his earlier error, guessed correctly and saved Emmanuel Amankwah’s effort from the spot.
The victory solidified Kotoko’s dominance in recent meetings, extending their unbeaten run against Hearts to five matches. More importantly, the win secured the President’s Cup title and set a confident tone for their upcoming international engagement in South Africa, where they are set to face Kaizer Chiefs in the Toyota Cup.
Hearts of Oak, licking their wounds from the loss, will regroup as they head to Nigeria for the Eko International Tournament, hoping to bounce back on the continental stage.
The latest chapter in the Kotoko-Hearts rivalry not only thrilled fans but also reaffirmed the enduring intensity of Ghana’s most iconic football showdown.
