Former Tempane Member of Parliament, Lawyer Joseph Kpemka, has disclosed that he deliberately refrained from challenging the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary election despite having the option to request a recount.
According to him, he believed circumstances surrounding the election contributed to his defeat, but he decided that maintaining peace was more important than pursuing a recount or contesting the results.
Speaking on Dreamz FM in Bolgatanga, Lawyer Kpemka said he could have taken steps to improve his figures through a recount but ultimately chose to accept the decision of the electorate.
“There was a conspiracy of faith that happened, and that is the reason why I lost, but I accepted it,” he said.
He explained that his decision was influenced by his belief that the outcome of an election must ultimately be respected once voters have spoken.
“I could have asked for a recount to push my numbers, but I chose peace over everything,” he stated.
The former MP said he had no intention of allowing a disputed election result to create tension within the constituency.
“The voice of the people is the voice of God, so I thanked them and left,” he said.
Despite conceding the election, Lawyer Kpemka remains confident about his performance during his tenure as MP.
He argued that when it comes to development, his record in the Tempane constituency compares favourably with that of his successor, NDC MP Hon. Lydia Kpemka.
“I do not mark my own script, but I have no doubt that if it is about development, then my wife, Hon. Madam Lydia, has not done better than I did,” he said.
Lawyer Kpemka maintained that his assessment was based on the projects and interventions implemented during his time in office rather than political considerations.
“I have done lots of development in Tempane,” he added.
His comments highlight his decision to draw a line under the 2024 election despite his reservations, while maintaining that his record in office remains a key measure of his contribution to the constituency.
