The Police Administration has temporarily shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region, citing safety concerns and strained community relations after violent youth unrest on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The disturbances erupted following the death of 27-year-old suspect, Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball, who was in police custody for unlawful entry and stealing. He reportedly died while receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi.
The incident triggered anger among sections of the youth, who stormed the police station and barracks, pelting stones and wielding clubs. Though an attempt was made to set the facility ablaze, police reinforcements arrived swiftly to contain the situation.
The Eastern Regional Command has since moved to calm tensions by meeting with the deceased’s family and local leaders. Officials assured them of a transparent investigation into the circumstances of Kena’s death, being conducted jointly by the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department.
In a statement, police said video evidence of the violence is under review to identify those who attacked the station, adding that suspects will face prosecution.
Community leaders have been urged to channel grievances through dialogue and lawful processes rather than resorting to violence. The Police stressed that restoring trust between security agencies and the people remains central to maintaining peace in Kukurantumi.
